Befuddled and Bewildered Thoughts of a Broke and Bored Father

Somewhere along the way through the empowerment of women and the movement to have fathers become an active part in their children’s life we forgot one crucial and fundamental concept, we’re men. We are clueless on what to do with a kid. The role of Mr. Mom might have worked for Michael Keaton and even most of us over a two hour stint, but what about the rest of the time. As I dove into the world of Daddy Daycare two things became confirmed- I really didn’t know what to do with my offspring and guys don’t talk to each other about what to do with their kids. As a father of three that has the wonderful opportunity to spend an entire day during the week as the lone parent I quickly realized, procreation is a dangerous thing and I needed a plan. With any child filling an eight hour day is not easy, especially trying to do it on a budget. In an attempt to shatter the stigma and tear down barriers I am going to go out on a limb and break the silence. So here it is … guy to guy and not for the faint of heart, simple concepts to know moving forward and some time busters that won’t break the bank.

Smile. Remember you’re the adult and kids don’t take prisoners. You can’t tell yourself enough through the course of the day to smile. Whether you’re laughing at yourself, your kids, or some else’s kids, slowing down to enjoy the moment and smile can do a world of good. Not to mention, a smile when you’re down and out is a friendly reminder that kids have to sleep, there is always tomorrow and sanity is a matter of perspective.

Be Bold. What you think is difficult probably will be, but do it. You have to keep trying, don’t give up. Try new things, places, crafts and ideas. Out of the dismal comes the extraordinary, your kids will surprise you in the most unlikely places at the most unlikely moments. The more you expose them, and yourself too as a fumbling father, the more you learn and the more they benefit.

Challenge Yourself. Break away from the electronic babysitter, get outside or force yourself to interact on a kid’s level. Make yourself talk to other parents, especially the other dads. Seek out something different and find out of the way places. Never become complacent, those “World’s Greatest Dad” coffee mugs aren’t just handed out.

Time Buster #1 - Feed the fish.
Location = Lake Ann, Outdoors Difficulty = Moderate (Due to open water) Cost = 25 cents (fish food) Visit a great outdoor location in Lake Ann, “Waterscapes”. A business built around nature with amazing landscape. Where else can you take kids to see waterfalls, bridges, ponds, beautiful water lilies, frogs, and feed huge Koi fish from an island gazebo? A wonderful spot to explore with the kids, take in all the scenery, and learn about the many varieties of fish and aquatic vegetation.

Time Buster #2 - Farm Fresh.
Location = Grand Traverse Area Difficulty = Moderate (Due to crowds) Cost = FREE (If you don’t buy anything) Tis the season for farmer markets and what great places to visit. There are several throughout the area that provide a unique opportunity for kids to roam in fresh air while learning about the many products available. Most all vendors are very kind and more than willing to spend time explaining what they sell and how it makes it from the farm to your home.

Best of FIVE STAR Rating is based on overall stress level, cost, consistent location and time, overall time spent, and total fun for everyone.
